St Matthew’s School was originally built as a Junior School to replace a Victorian building in the Ewell Road. In 1984 it was amalgamated with a neighbouring Infants’ School to become a Primary School. Internal alterations continue to take place to provide more storage space and recently a junior library and computer room. The large grounds provide ample space for a football pitch, netball court, adventure playground area, tarmac playgrounds and a covered way as a protected play area for the Infants in inclement weather.

Hollyfield is an 11-18 school and well able to provide a continuous education right through to A-level and BTEC qualifications. To achieve this continuity, the school is organised on a year basis with every pupil having a Head of Year and a form teacher looking after them. In Year 7 pupils are placed in mixed ability forms and ability teaching groups after analysis of Fast Track test and SAT’s results and receiving information from the feeder Primary School. We also take into account parental wishes when establishing form groups. Unless there is good reason for change, pupils generally remain in the same form until they have taken their GCSEs. We continue this organisation through Years 8 and 9 with all pupils being regularly reviewed using our electronic assessment system and movement between teaching groups carried out at the end of the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms. Years 10 and 11 are taught in subject sets, enabling pupils to be entered for GCSE at the appropriate level. In the Sixth Form all teaching is done in groups according to the course being followed.

We are a three-form entry junior school and our classes are mixed ability, although we sometimes set for maths. Classes will never exceed 30 children in number. Applications for places should be made through the school office. Our teacher pupil ratio is very good at 1 per 22 children (and that is excluding our Headteacher). Two of our teachers are Advance Skills Teachers and one is a leading teacher - this means they have been recognised for their outstanding skills and ability. We have fully trained Teaching Assistants full time in each year group. They have also been trained in a range of specialisms including: speech and language, spelling and writing, reading, assessing children's specific needs, emotional/behavioral needs, and supporting children whose first language is not English. We have a librarian, an ICT technician and 7 of our staff are trained First Aiders.
